YANA TOYBER

Yana Toyber is a visual artist and photographer with a focus on analog photography. Born in Ukraine, Toyber moved to New York City at the age of two. Her artistic career began at the age of eleven when she performed with the New York City Ballet as a dancer. The recipient of the Kodak Eastman House Award, Scholastic, and NFAA Awards, Yana Toyber earned a BFA in photography from New York’s School of Visual Arts. Her photography has appeared in The Fader, Vanity Fair, Nylon, W, Zoo Magazine, Modern painters, S Magazine, Juxtapoz, Autre, as well as various commercial campaigns. Her book of photography, This Time (2015) was exhibited at the MOMA PS1 Book Fair and the Geffen Contemporary MOCA LA Book Fair. Toyber’s primary interests include feminism, ballet, environmental preservation, biology, nature vs. nurture, and bodies of water. She shoots  Polaroid, medium format, and 35mm film, digitally, and often underwater. Her visual style is dreamy as well as pragmatic, whenever possible she shares a deep connection with her subjects.

"A lot of Yana's work celebrates the grace and grit of beautiful women and their fearless ways”.  She was a leader in the fourth-wave feminist art movement with her notorious project 4 sale where she orchestrated a collective of female photographers who used each other as muses to create their bodies of work. As well as a strong portfolio of sex workers she’s worked on since 1997.
